2-2 Final Project Milestone One: Topic and Setting Submission

Topic and Setting Submission

My final project involves studying the relationships between the decision-making process and treatment intervention in drug abuse and addiction. This topic is crucial because it can improve mental health treatment outcomes. As a result, I will take mental health as my applied setting.

Substance misuse problems and addiction in the mental health setting are associated with the cognitive psychology of decision-making profoundly. Individuals with cognitive processes disrupted by substance use disorders can have a hard time assessing risks and benefits, resulting in maladaptive choice behaviors (Alcorn et al., 2023). Cognitive biases, particularly those associated with reward sensitivity and impulsivity, could be the reasons for the worsening conditions of the patient, therefore delaying treatment progress and leading to a higher rate of relapse. Without comprehending how the cognitive processes intervene in the decision-making of drug abuse, we may find it challenging to develop suitable interventions that can fit within the mental health setting (Alcorn et al., 2023). Through developing strategies for overcoming cognitive biases and improving decision-making abilities through targeted programs like cognitive-behavioral therapy or cognitive training, health professionals can help individuals in the process of their recovery. Hence, the study of the connection between cognitive psychology and addiction recovery treatment in mental health care plays a crucial role in creating better outcomes as well as lasting recovery.

Research Questions

How do cognition biases affect decision-making processes in a person with substance use disorder, and how can cognitive biases targeted intervention help improve treatment outcomes?

What is the precise basis of relapse among people recovering from drug use disorders, and how can memory-based interventions be employed to prevent these bases and enhance sustained recovery?

How effective are the attention training methods at enhancing impulse control and decreasing cravings in people with substance use disorders, and what are the potential implications of incorporating these methods into existing treatment programs?
