Discussion
The topic of conversation this week is should a company produce and sell any product as long as there is a market for it? This will be divided into personal/professional beliefs then the ending of this discussion will be talking about what Christ thinks about whether or not a company should produce or sell any product as long as there is a market for it. Getting personal standpoints out the way, I personally believe that a company can produce any product and service as long as there is a market for it. The market really gives a good insight on the morality of the nation that it inhabits, if the people had a greater moral standpoint, then some “bad” products and services would not exist because there would be no market for it. You inherently cannot tell adults what they can or cannot buy or do.
Companies have an inherent responsibility, “the notions of responsibility and ethics are limited to the legal framework and sometimes to a code of conduct, while profitability remains the only criterion that affects decision-making on both individual and institutional levels” Mili, Gharbi, Teulon, 2019, p. 974). The words that should be focused on in this statement is the “legal framework” this means that if its not morally wrong, and it does not hurt someone, then they have no obligation to anyone not to make that product or service.
However personal or professional feelings toward this issue, Christ does address it. Christ discusses the desires of the flesh, and inherently, products and services are made to address our needs as humans. Christ says in Galatians 5:19-21 ESV “Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.” Christ does not want us to live to please our flesh, he wants us to live for him and only him. We must block our worldly desires and live for Christ and Christ alone.
