Background: Modern descendants of the Carib, the Garifuna people of Honduras, reject the representation of their ancestors as savage cannibals. Garifuna activists took offense at Disney’s portrayal of the Caribs as cannibalistic in the film Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest (2006). The Garifuna American Heritage Foundation United (GAHFU) organized a peaceful protest upon the film’s opening, decrying the representation of their ancestors as racist, stereotypical, and traumatizing to their communities.
