I read an article regarding barriers to evidence-based practice that I wanted to share with you. Shayan et al. (2019) found that there were three barriers to evidence-based practice: institutional related barriers, interdisciplinary barriers, and nurse-related barriers. I agree with these barriers! In my practice the institutional related barriers have arisen through funding/finance or allocation of resources. Interdisciplinary barriers arisen through conflict. The teams may not have been on the same page with a common goal. What I was wanting to achieve may have interfered with another teams process. Nurse-related barriers often raised with “we have done this in the past and it was not successful” or some type of resistance to change.
Change is hard! Working with others can be tough and may slow down the progression. As we are learning about evidence-based practice, what can we do as facilitators to embrace change and implementing evidence-based practice?
