Professor Smith and Classmates,
After viewing the “Marty Case Study” video in the Topic 8 folder in MindTap, the impact I believe that would cause Marty to have counterproductive communication would be the fact that Marty faces challenges when expressing his thoughts, feelings, emotions, statements, and ideas. Marty is likely to experience counterproductive communication as he works on improving verbal self-expression. Due to his challenges with communication, others may not be able to fully grasp or understand what Marty may be trying to express. Non-verbal gestures or cues would be helpful to Marty because non-verbal cues help confirm or deny messages conveyed verbally and are in large part beyond the conscious awareness of participants (Hepworth et al, 2016). Marty should place his focus on working on his non-verbal communication including eye contact and facial expressions because this can help identify the way Marty is feeling. The steps that I would take to ensure my verbal and nonverbal responses are the right ones to move the process forward are using non-verbal cues such as eye contact, head nods to show attentiveness, facial expressions, and showing empathy and compassion to that Marty feels comfortable with sharing his thoughts and feelings. My verbal tone would be warm and welcoming, and I would also repeat, paraphrase, and confirm what Marty is saying to show that I am interested and present. Verbal and nonverbal communication are important when helping a client develop measurable goals for themselves because it establishes better perspective on the message being sent. The sender of message as well as receiver gets what is the intended meaning of the message and can act accordingly. Process of sending and receiving of message is successful and gets desired results (Bairacharya, 2018).
