OSHA requires employers to use different types of strategies to minimize exposure in the work place to blood borne pathogens. 2 strategies are- PPE and Universal Precautions (Standard Precautions).
Can you identify some problems if health care workers don’t follow these controls? The other 2 are engineering controls and work practice controls. In your own words, define what each means and then detail the difference between the two.

1. If healthcare workers don’t comply with PPE and universal precautions, they risk bringing harm to themselves. Healthcare workers can get infected with blood-borne pathogens. In addition, they could also endanger the patient’s health. A patient may have a serious illness, so their immune system is already in a compromised state. If the patient does contract the infection, they may not have the strength to fight it. Healthcare workers not complying could potentially threaten the patient’s lives. Engineering controls remove blood-borne pathogen hazards from the work facility.(Satterlee,et,al,2012) Work practice controls reduce risk by modifying the way tasks can be done. (Satterlee, et, al,2012) What makes them different? For example, engineering controls include but are not limited to sharp containers, biohazard labels, eyewash stations.(Satterlee,et,al,2012) Work practice controls may include but not limited to PPE, washing hands, decontamination and sterilization of equipment, handling sharps with safeness, properly disposing items, and finding a safe way to manage laundry.(Satterlee,et,al,2012)
