Speech pathology is a diverse field full of a variety of opportunities to help individuals from different age groups to be more independent and the ability to work in a variety of different settings. Describe yourself professionally 5-years from now. Where do you hope to be working, what type of professional will you be?
Five years from now, I hope to be a SLP who is working with children with complex needs to help them be more integrated in the community. I’m leaning more into working in a hospital or a rehab setting either specializing in feeding and swallowing disorders or in technology and augmentative and alternative communication.
In the past seven years I worked as a case manager, I was astonished with the number of children who needed to be seen by SLPs and followed up either in a school setting or hospital/rehab settings and were not able to due to lack of service, technology and manpower. With the several initiatives that are taking place in Saudi Arabia in healthcare and education; I believe that those children will have better access to reach not only SLPs but other care providers such as pediatricians, PT and OT specialists and hopefully will have better access to schools as one of the objectives in improving education is to have more inclusion programs for children with special needs and better access to schools in general.
List any other things you’re ok with me highlighting in your letter that speaks to your diversity or experience (e.g., first generation student, grew up in low-income area, raised children during college, foreign language proficiency, travel experiences, etc.)—things that would help me to individualize your letter.
Arabic is my native language and when I came to the US I had to go to an intensive English program to learn English. It was a big adjustment for me to be in a totally different culture and learning a new language but it was an extremely rewarding experience. I learned to depend on myself, to be more confident and participate in different student clubs. I met people from all around the world who I am still in touch with till this day. I believe that being in different culture and in a far away country from home helped me become stronger, more open to discussion, more willing to leave my comfort zone and to voice my opinions and accept different views.
