Lab Science 4 – Learning
Note: Read the instructions sheet first! Then answer all questions on this form and fill in the written pieces of the report where indicated.
1. Research question:
a. Will hearing dice shaking in a cup make people flinch?
i. What variable is the independent variable?
ii. What variable is the dependent variable?
2. Before you collect your data, create a null and alternative hypothesis about the research question using your own experiences to guide you. You may look up information online to guide these hypotheses, but you may not collect data (i.e., do not collect data first and THEN come up with hypotheses – we need hypotheses before we collect data). Try to make your alternative hypothesis as specific as possible. Remember: the null hypothesis is simply that nothing is happening (there are no differences).

4. Looking at your line graph, did participants start to flinch to the sound of the dice in the cup as the study went on? How would you change this study in the future?
5. Identify the pieces of classical conditioning here:
a. Unconditioned stimulus:
b. Unconditioned response:
c. Conditioning stimulus:
d. Conditioned response:
6. Points to think about:
a. The odds of rolling an even is 50/50. Would the results have changed if you rolled all odds or all evens?
Research Report
Introduction (2-3 sentences, gives background on the study – includes one citation with supporting evidence and a statement of your original null and alternative hypotheses).
Method (1-2 sentences that provide enough detail about what you did so that someone else could read this section alone and replicate what you did).
Results(1-2 sentences that summarize your findings).
Figures (create and include a Line Graph with the flinching data – see Instructions Document for tips on how this should look).
Discussion (2-3 sentences that clearly state what you found, why you think you found that, and what study you would do next).
References: Provide the reference for your citation (from the Introduction) here in APA format.
