1. Examine Hamric’s three primary criteria for advanced nursing practice
2. Describe how these criteria compare with the regulatory vision described in the APRN Consensus Model?
Since the 1960s, advanced practice nursing has been introduced in many countries in response to rapidly increasing health care needs (Devictor et al., 2022). It is a complex system with conceptual confusion and uncertainty, therefore systematic structures and models were implemented to clarify role identity and responsibilities (Devictor et al., 2022). Among these frameworks, Hamric’s conceptual framework of advanced nursing practice focuses on three primary criteria: graduate level education, certification, and patient/family-centered clinical practice (Devictor et al., 2022). Graduate level of education in masters or doctorate programs help individuals gain specialized knowledge and skills in providing care to patients of the APRN roles and population focus they specialized in (Tracy & O’Grady, 2018). National certification demonstrates their competency and qualification in APRN. Lastly, APRN includes different areas of specialties such as; nurse-midwife, nurse-anesthetist, critical care, and focuses on family/individuals across life span from neonatal to gerontology (Tracy & O’Grady, 2018).
Hamric’s three primary criteria are similar with the regulatory vision described in the APRN Consensus Model. The APRN consensus Model defines roles, title, population foci, and sepcialites within the regulatory framework (Tracy & O’Grady, 2018). It helps clarify some of the conceptual confusion in early models such as those of Hamric’s. The model emphasizes the importance of education preparation and advanced practice in a specialty and population focus. According to APRN Consensus Model, graduate education for the APRN roles must include the “three P’s”: advanced physiology and pathophysiology, advanced physical health assessment, and advanced pharmacology (Tracy & O’Grady, 2018). The Consensus Mode indicates that certification must be within the same area of study regarding one of the APRN roles and population focus (Tracy & O’Grady, 2018). The population displayed in APRN Consensus Model is the same as those listed in Hamric’s framework which included the individual and family across the lifespan and preparation in the area of speciality in pediatric, psychiatric/ mental health, women’s health, and even oncology (Tracy & O’Grady, 2018).
