Roach, J. (2022). Intel says Moore’s Law is alive and well. Nvidia says it’s dead. Which is right?. Retrieve from https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/nvidia-intel-moores-law-debate/

Objectives

The author mentions Moore’s Law’s perspective for different microchip companies.

Nvidia’s Chief executive officer previously said that Moore’s Law is dead. On the other hand, Intel’s CEO believes that Moore’s law is alive and they will continue to work and prove it.

The author says that Nvidia CEO was talking about an economic perspective when he mentioned Moore’s Law.

In the end the author believes that no one is right because Moore’s Law is just a trend.

Moore’s Law is beneficial for companies like Intel and Nvidia to plan their future goals.

Summary

Moore’s Law has been the point of talk for many big tech companies, especially when announcing their new technologies and vision for the future. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger stated that Moore’s Law is alive and well after Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang said that he believes that Moore’s Law is dead. Moore’s Law came after Gordon Moore found a trend in the computing world where every two years the number of transistors on a chip would change and double. He wrote articles about the trends with his experience, which is why Moore’s Law is named after him. In 1975, Moore’s Law became a concept, and the name came from Carver Mead.

Intel uses Moore’s Law as a road map and is looking forward to changing their transistors measurements from nanometers to angstroms. This new technology change will prove to them that Moore’s Law is not dead.

For Nvidia’s CEO, Moore’s Law is dead, but it seems that he was referring to an economic point to justify GPU prices going up, which is more related to Rock’s Law, which is the law that talks about the cost of fabricating chips. After the pandemic caused supply chain issues, chipmakers such as TSMC, which is Nvidia’s partner, are raising their costs. In the end, each tech company follows its own rules and shares its own beliefs.

Results

Both tech CEOs can’t be correct, which means there’s more going on in these two statements than meets the eye.

These big tech companies’ CEOs seem to believe in whatever is more convenient for their company’s goals.

I believe that Intel’s CEO utilizes Moore’s Law as their goal to continue their tech improvement.

This road map suggests Moore’s Law isn’t dead, which was an opinion shared by chipmaker TSMC in a bold 2014 article simply titled “Moore’s Law is not dead.”

It is also convenient for TSMC to continue showing improvement in their microchips every two years.

Road maps are excellent tools that companies can utilize to establish their goals and vision for the future.

When Huang told the press last week that “Moore’s Law is dead,” he’s talking about it from an economic approach.

Nvidia’s CEO should have clarified his point of view when saying that Moore’s Law is dead because it is not clear if he was really talking about Moore’s Law or if he was justifying Rock’s Law.

Both are trends recognized by engineers decades ago, and although they have largely held true, the ones who defined the “laws” are also the ones responsible for executing them.

It makes sense when the author mentions that these companies are the ones responsible to execute these laws, if they do not continue to show improvement with their transistors, then Moore’s Law would not be relevant anymore.

Worldview Consideration–Ethical or Legal Considerations

In my opinion, it is unethical how these big companies, especially their CEO talk without having realistic fundaments. They share their opinion on whatever is more beneficial for their company.

Worldview Consideration–Christian Worldview

Technology is an essential part of our daily lives, especially with the progress it has shown for years in our humanity. Many lectures in the bible mention the changes that will come to our world related to technology and improvements. Moore’s Law is a trend that has proven to be accurate, so the question is how Gordon Moore was able to predict the future of computer chips, just like the bible continues to prove itself in technology and other aspects of our lives.

Questions

Is Moore’s Law still the main focus for big tech companies?

I think the answer is, it depends. Some companies like Intel, believe that Moore’s Law is still alive and they will continue to use it as a focus for the future. If they meet the trends of Moore’s Law their chips will become smaller and faster. Some other companies just work and focus on their own beliefs.

How has Moore’s law impacted technology?

Moore’s Law has been used to guide research and develop new technologies. It is also used to project the semiconductor company’s future plans, which motivates them to continue showing improvement every two years.

Has new technology slowed down after the COVID-19 pandemic?

The whole world was not prepared for a pandemic like the COVID-19 pandemic. Many manufacturers had to stop production when governments worldwide started lockdowns to stop the spread of the virus. Even after manufacturers started to produce microchips again, the technology sectors needed help dealing with shortages. Semiconductors companies were affected as well as automakers, because they did not have enough chips to continue their production.
