Read the following passages:
“The dead guy’s name was Curt Lemon. What happened was, we crossed a muddy river and marched west…tree full of moss and vines and white blossoms.” (p. 69 or p. 66)
“This one does it for me… ‘sin’s real fresh and original’” (p. 78 or p. 74)
“This one wakes me up… threw down the parts.” (p. 82 or p. 79)
“Twenty years later… must’ve been the final truth.” (p. 84 or p. 80)
What images are repeated in the four passages?
How does each passage open and close? What are the similarities and differences?
The passages vary considerably in length. What information is included in some and not in others?
Why does O’Brien repeat the same story several times in the same chapter?
How do the different versions alter the meaning of the story? Are any of them more or less true?
Read the last two paragraphs of the chapter. How would you characterize the difference between “truth” and “fact” based on this chapter?
Write a paragraph (or two) that states a thesis about this chapter, the repetition of the Curt Lemon story, and the fact and truth. Using evidence from the text in the form of quotes, prove your thesis. Turn these paragraphs in to the assignment on Canvas.
