ANTHROPOMETRICS LAB
CALCULATIONS
Body Mass Index (BMI)
Method 1:
BMI = kg/m2
Method 2:
BMI = (703 x pounds)/ Inches2
NOTE:
Convert weight in pounds (lb) to kilograms (kg), using the following conversions:
Weight (lb) / 2.2 = Weight (kg)
Convert height in inches (in) to meters (m), using one of the following conversions:
Height (in) x 0.0254 = Height (m)
Height (in) / 39.37 = Height (m)
Make sure to square meters (m2)!
Waist-to-Hip Ratio = Waistline measurement (in) / Hip measurement (in)
Frame Size
Method 1: Height-to-Wrist Ratio
r = Height (cm) / Wrist circumference (cm)
NOTE:
Convert height in inches (in) to centimeters (cm), using the following conversion:
Height (in) x 2.54 = Height (cm)
Method 2: Height and Elbow Breadth
See lab manual
Percent Fat (% Fat)
Method 1: Skinfold Measurements
Female = Suprailium (mm) + Thigh (mm) + Triceps (mm)
Male = Abdomen (mm) + Chest (mm) + Thigh (mm)
Method 2: Body Fat Analyzer (aka, Bioelectric Impedance Method)
See lab manual
Ideal Body Weight
Method 1:
Fat Weight (FW) = Current Body Weight (CBW) x % Fat
Lean Body Mass (LBM) = CBW – FW
Ideal Body Weight (IBW) = LBM / (1.0 – IPF)
NOTE:
Ideal Percent Fat (IPF) can be found in Table 6 in the Appendix
Method 2: Hamwi Formula (based on medium-framed individuals)
Female:
100 lb (5’) – 5 lb (for each inch under 5’)*
100 lb (5’) + 5 lb (for each inch over 5’)
Male:
106 lb (5’) – 6 lb (for each inch under 5’)*
106 lb (5’) + 6 lb (for each inch over 5’)
NOTE: Add 10% for large frame and subtract 10% for small frame
* Subtract only if you are under 5 foot tall.
Percent Ideal Body Weight (% IBW) = (CBW / IBW) x 100%
Midarm Muscle Circumference (cm) = Midarm circumference (cm) – [0.314 x triceps fatfold (mm)]
