Section 1: Personal Diversity Story (one page)
What does diversity mean to you?
Who are you? What makes you diverse? Examples: Ability, Age, Body, Education, Gender, Religion, Sexual Orientation/Identity, Socioeconomic standing, other. Have you always lived in this state or have you lived other places? ( I am a Bi racial woman black mother and a white father, straight a Christian, bachelor’s in social work, and a master’s in human resources development, I have lived in North Carolina most all my life.)
What is your racial background? What is your ethnic heritage? Are you clear about your ethnic and racial identity? If yes, why? If no, why not? Is your race/ethnicity celebrated or practiced in your family? How? This could include food, music, language, religion, traditions, etc. If not, why not? Be specific in answering these questions which could include examples, stories and/or conversations. I do not really know my racial background my family never talks about it so there is no celebrating the practice in my family. Sometimes I battle with who I really am
What is the meaning of your name (perhaps the literal meaning, but also: why did your family give you your first and middle name – do you connect with your last name)? Honestly, my mom got my name off a soap opera show from a long time ago.
Who and/or what have been the most significant influences in the development of your identity?
Section 2: Diversity Experience (at least one page)
As a child, did you have friends who were different than you (Examples: Ability, Age, Body, Education, Gender, Religion, Sexual Orientation/Identity, Socioeconomic standing, other)? Either way (i.e.: whether your answer was yes or no) how has this influenced how you view and have interacted with people from different backgrounds as you have grown up? Yes, I had different friends growing up because I lived in a military town. It was very diverse
How were people of different backgrounds viewed in your family? How were they treated? What messages did you get about people who were “different” from you? What generational differences have you experienced?
What experiences have you had with people who you perceive as different to you?
Have you ever experienced feeling “different”? Describe your experience.
Section 3: IDI Personal Development Plan (one page)
For the 4 week Plan: Did you accomplish your goals? Did the plan help you further develop your intercultural competence? Did the accountability partner help keep you on track? Why or why not to all? Yes, I accomplished my 4 week’s plan. My accountability group kept me on track at the bottom is my 4 week IDI plan
