Module 7: Overview & Outcomes

Overview

In this module, we will examine the role of goals and mindsets on motivation. First, we will take a look at how goals motivate us through discrepancy reduction and creation. Many people have goals but never seem to actualize these. Sometimes it is a motivational issue alone, but many times it has to do with ineffective goal setting. Goals that are set may be too vague, too difficult, or not difficult enough. Other times, people fail to reach their goals because they have a difficult time staying on track.

Next, we will look at the role that mindsets have on motivation and well being, including: deliberative vs. implemental; promotion vs. prevention; and growth fixed mindsets. Next, we will look at how cognitive dissonance may interfere with psychological well being and motivation, sometimes even at a subconscious level.

Finally, we will examine the types of goals that people choose (intrinsic or extrinsic) and the impact that the types of goals we pursue and even attain, have on our psychological well being.
