1. Why does Tartuffe find it so easy to exploit Orgon? Consider Orgon’s personality, social position, age, and family situation as you discuss his character traits and why he becomes so enamored with Tartuffe and completely blind to his hypocrisy. Exactly what effects does Tartuffe have on Orgon and why? How do you view Orgon’s shift in attitude by the ending of the play?
2. Which characters in the play represent virtues or positive qualities? Who are they? What do they represent and how is their role specifically demonstrated in the play?
3. Choose either Cléante or Dorine and explain how he/she is indispensable to the plot of the play? How might the play be affected if either his or her part were omitted?
4. Consider the finale of the play (end of Act 5): does the final turn of events with the King’s intervention seem overly contrived? Why or why not? Would you have preferred the characters to work out a resolution on their own? Do you think that would have been possible, given the circumstances and characters involved?
