The purpose of this assignment is to explore an issue related to crime and punishment in depth and reveal the implications of a particularpolicy in that area and how we might expect it to impact cities. The paper requires a historical overview of the policy; a discussion of the target population, the demographics (who is affected, etc.); adiscussion of the ideologyand values that are the basis of/inherent in the policy; an analysis of the policy in light of its intent -a substantive discussion of the implications of the policy in regard tosuch factors asgeography, race, and class; and consideration of alternative approaches, or affirmation as to why and how the policy is working to attain its goal.
The paper has 5 parts. (1)An identification and discussion of the issue and relatedpolicy and a brief historical overview of the policy. Include in your discussion an explanation of how this policy affects or impacts targeted groups/individualsas well as society as a whole. In your historical review, examine and discuss the development of the policy: why was it developed, to what issues or problems was it responding, and what wasitintended to accomplish?(2)A description/discussion of the demographics of the target population (who this policy is aimed to affect) including who benefits and under what conditions.Should we expect different outcomes in urban areas compared to non-urban areas?(3)A discussion of the ideologyand values that underpin this policy. If there are specific political influences (for example, the President/governor, interest groups, Congress/state legislature), discuss them.(4)An analysis of the policy in light of its stated intent: a substantive discussion of the implications of the policy in regard togeography,race,and class. Does the policy “do” what it intended to? If not, why? If so, how well?(5)The consideration and presentation of alternative approaches, or affirmation that the policy is workingto attain its goal: What approaches or solutions might better embrace address the issue you have identified in the area of crime and punishment? If the policy is working to attain its goal, discuss how and why. In this section you should pay particular attention to how this policy is working (or not) to advance important criminal justice concerns.
