COLLAPSEAfter assessing Mr. Jone’s case, I would first address the policies that the community holds. I know that there are challenges with released criminals obtaining somewhere to live, but some section 8 communities will accept those individuals because they know they are struggling. Section 8 is a resource that a social worker would provide to a released prisoner. The next thing I would access is both parties’ races to ensure no discriminatory actions are being shown. Both are different sexes but, it never states their races. Next, I would access the family to get their thoughts and feelings. They lived within that community for 12 years without getting into any trouble, and now he and his family may have to separate. Separation can cause depression and may cause children to act out. The final thing I would do is try to help him and his family relocates to another community that fits their budget so they can all remain together.
I believe that School-to-prison-pipeline was created just to target African Americans. As stated In the video, African Americans are targeted more when it comes to school-to-prison pipelines versus whites. As social workers, we need to advocate for diversity as well as human rights. I once was a victim of a zero-tolerance policy and stayed in OSS. Teachers and principals never gave me the opportunity to talk to a counselor or a social worker. They all just suspended me, not knowing what was going on. In situations like this is where social workers are needed. Children do not have a voice or may be scared to use their voice, and we as social workers need to be the ones to help advocate to prevent and intervene in the school-to-prison pipelines for the youth.
