you will write your response to the six questions in the form of an essay

you will write your response to the six questions in the form of an essay of approximately 900 words (3 pages). Not every question out of numbers 2-5 may be relevant, that’s OK. Focus on the ones that are most important. Step one:
Choose a scene from one of the following films:

The Missing Picture
Hate
The Time That Remains
Hunger
Madame Satã
Atlantics

Be sure to tell me what scene you have chosen (either a timecode, or place the scene in the narrative, for example, “The scene where Bobby Sands and Father Dom debate the merits of a hunger strike”).
If I cannot figure out what scene you’re writing about, I cannot grade your assignment, which means you will have forced me to give you an F.
Step two: Answer each of the following questions, as much as is relevant, using complete sentences. This time, you are writing an essay. Not every question needs the same level of detail to answer, and your essay should be structured by your analysis of the scene rather than the order of the questions. This means that you might begin with question #6 and let your mock thesis statement be the guide for the rest of your essay. PLEASE NOTE: questions 1-5 refer specifically and only to the scene you chose. Question 6 is about the whole film. 1. Why is this scene significant for the film’s narrative and style? 2. Which aspects of the film’s mise-en-scène are most significant here? Please do not give an inventory of the entire mise-en-scène. 3. Which aspects of the film’s cinematography are most significant? (In other words: what is the camera doing that seems important?)4. What is the sound doing that seems important/significant? 5. What is the editing doing to help make meaning? What (if anything) is stylistically interesting about the editing?6. If you were to write a paper about this whole movie, what would your thesis statement be and why? Do not write “my thesis statement would be about…” Write an actual thesis statement as if you were writing the paper today.
