Based on what you learned this week:
(1) find an online news article from NPR, PBS, BBC, or the New York Times,* on one of the following social problems:
(a) homelessness, (b) the opioid crisis, (c) human trafficking, or (d) the Covid19 pandemic
(2) analyze the article using one of the main sociological perspectives discussed this week:
– Use functionalism if your last names start with A-F
– Use conflict theory if your last name starts with G-M
– Use a feminist perspective if your last name starts with N-R
– Use symbolic interactionism if your last name starts with S-Z
(3) For your essay, use specific examples from the newspaper article to explain how your assigned perspective would approach the social problem and include a link to the article. Base your argument in the course materials (i.e., reading and lecture)
Remember that this is an assignment so write in full sentences using paragraphs and proper grammar.  In this class, we are all sociologists.  Remove your opinions and beliefs and instead use the course materials and the article to make your points.  See tips on writing like a sociologist in the Useful Resources folder.  Review information on the syllabus regarding expectations and review the grading rubric.
Looking forward to a good discussion to get the semester started.
*These are reliable news sources meaning they rely on fact reporting instead of opinion.  See the media bias chart: https://www.adfontesmedia.com/ (linked below and in the Useful Resources folder) for more on methods to determine the level of bias.  Re-consider where you get your news to make sure you’re getting facts that you can evaluate instead of biased spin or opinion so that you can make informed decisions and create informed opinions of your own.
