The first section of this assignment asks the student to study the student learning outcomes

The first section of this assignment asks the student to study the student learning
outcomes (pages 2 and 3) and, reflecting on your own learning needs, indicate two of the
outcomes that you need the most work on and explain why. Then, write at least three
other personal goals for the course. Following are some examples.
1. I have really never understood exactly what it is that social workers do. I want to
leave this class understanding the social work process.
2. It is difficult for me to speak up in class. I know that social workers have to be
able to talk to individuals and groups of people, therefore I plan to ask questions
or add my comment in class.
3. I have not had good experiences when I have worked in groups because I tend to
take over the direction of the group. I want to be a facilitator rather than a leader
on my team. I will make sure that all voices are heard each time we meet.
Also include a personal goals and goals statement.
The second section of this assignment is designed for you to see how it feels to be described by
your problems and by your strengths. You can do this alone or get some feedback from others.
a. Describe yourself in a paragraph of 100 words or less using strengths-based
descriptive words.
b. Answer the following questions. How does each descriptive statement sound to
you? How do you feel about yourself when you read each one? What have you
learned about this experience that you can use in social work practice? How does
what you learned connect to what we have been discussing and reading in this
class?
In the third part, write a paragraph on each of the following questions.
a. Which of your strengths do you believe will be particularly helpful in relation to
social work practice? Why?
b. Social workers need to be aware of their own triggers and tender spots, as well as
past issues that may have an impact on their practice. What are some of your
issues that you need to consider?
c. Social workers practice from a specific value base. What social work values will
be a challenge for you to embrace? Why? Make specific reference to the NASW
Code of Ethics.
d. As you grew up, what were your personal biases, stereotypes, and attitudes about
race, ethnicity, gender, age, class, sexual orientations, mental and physical

abilities, and power? How have you changed these over time and which will be
continuing challenges for you?
Paper should be between six (6) and eight (8) pages, not including reference page
and cover sheet, and include a minimum of five (5) in-text citations using proper
APA format.
