MOTIVATION:
The labor discipline model presented this week, in Unit 6, is extremely fascinating. It is interesting to work through this model and then step back to consider all of the ways I have experienced these dynamics in my employment history as a bus boy, a landscaper, a barista, and now an instructor at a university. This Hidden Brain podcast from NPR discusses how it isn’t just wages that can motivate people to give effort, but awards, and the recognition that often comes with awards, can also motivate people to exert large amounts of effort.
PROMPT:
Describe a job that you have held where you were either an employee or manager.
Using the notion of an incomplete contract given in Unit 6 this week – see sections 6.3 and 6.10 – discuss the ways in which your employment contract was “incomplete”.
Now, think about the labor discipline model, did your employer try to incentivize employees to give maximum effort? If so, how? If not, was it not necessary? Explain
If you were to own and/or manage a firm, how would you try to motivate workers and overcome the uncertainty of the incomplete employment contract? Explain.
