Your Social Movements Research Project is based on the oral history you have selected. The project is divided up into several assignments throughout the rest of the semester. The reason I have done this is ensure that you know how to work through the research process. The submission of your bibliography is Part II of this project.
Part II. Your bibliography should utilize one secondary source (an academic book or journal article on the subject) and two primary sources. Your oral history counts as one primary source, the second should be a newspaper account, oral history, or official document) on the topic.
You may utilize the HCC library database for articles or other electronic resources on the topic to find a secondary source. I am expecting a minimum of a 30-40 page journal article or book chapter as your secondary source. If you do not find one single secondary source of this length, then I will expect that you are consulting several secondary sources. The secondary source is important because it provides historical context for your topic and sometimes offers a framework for you to discuss and create an argument.
A primary source is a first-hand account from the time period you are studying. To find a primary source you may conduct internet research on the topic from reputable sites. If you are unsure whether a source is reputable, then email me to verify. A tip for searching for primary sources online you can do a search for “digital archives [topic]”. For example “digital archives Black Panthers”, and look for sites from universities, state/local government, museums, or libraries. Having primary sources are important because this is your evidence to support your argument.
Once you have your sources submit the following information within the assignment box:
- Your topic
- Your secondary source (written in Chicago Manual of Style)
- Your primary sources (written in Chicago Manual of Style)
Consult http://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. to see how to format the citation for a book, a journal article, an interview, a newspaper article, or a website. You will be graded on proper formatting of your bibliography, so if you have any questions, please contact me.
