Option 1: Tensions Between Modernity and Traditional Religion: Throughout the class, we have studied the tensions that have arisen between “modernity” and religion, and we have seen that some religious people more readily seek to adapt religious beliefs in order to ensure that their religion complies with changing ideas about science, gender roles, cultural diversity, etc. In this essay, please choose three different religions we’ve studied and consider how they grappled with the challenges of modernity. Be sure to focus on one specific example in each paragraph, and develop that example with concrete evidence. Choose one example of a religious group that strongly resisted change, one that celebrated and embraced change, and one that fell somewhere in the middle of the extremes. Remember that you are being graded on your understanding of course material, so your readings must come from course readings and lectures in order for you to receive credit.
