Mary is a White social work student who plans to go on for a MS degree and work in a

city life, but in her free time is actively involved in social activities centered around her
Scottish background. She is taking a class from a professor who is of a different nationality than she. Although the professor has lived in the United States for several years,
he has a very pronounced accent and she finds his English difficult to understand.
Mary feels that this particular professor is very knowledgeable and has a lot of relevant
personal experiences to share with the class. The class is a lecture class, with the professor talking for the majority of the time. Because the material is new and somewhat
difficult to understand, the language barrier can make it more difficult at times.
Mary actively listens and follows along in the book. She raises her hand when
she does not understand what the professor is saying. He is always more than happy
to explain further. Also, he is aware that at times students may find it difficult to
understand him, and he is not embarrassed to ask for help from the class. Mary has
discovered that she is actually learning more from the class because she is following
in the book and attending more closely to the professor’s words than she would
otherwise.
During class, it is easy to hear mumbling about the professor from some of her
classmates. After class, these same students openly share their feelings within earshot
of the professor, saying he is not a good teacher and does not know his subject matter.
Mary is upset by the students’ comments, which she attributes to their unwillingness
to work at understanding what he is saying.
