PLEASE RESPOND TO JASON’S ORIGINAL POST:
Dr. Smith and Class,

When looking at Public Administration now in retrospect of finishing my coursework, I can say I have a different perspective on many things. I think this goes without saying, but if it has affected me as a person and official, it can have a great impact on the nation as a whole. According to Teresa Gerton in her Journal of Public Affairs Education article, are the most significant challenges facing our entire nation, and the field of public administration must be central to the development of effective solutions. Public administration is critical to ensuring that the public sector has the expertise needed to address the most pressing civic problems facing society. It includes a wide range of actors, including federal, state, and local career civil servants; political appointees; contractors; academics; and professional associations and good government organizations. This is a broad field and a deep bench for the nation to draw upon to address its Grand Challenges in Public Administration (1). In short, I think the key is we as administrators, public officials, and stewards of public trust must think outside of the box for ways to embrace this ever-evolving world we live in. COVID-19 was a game-changer for must of us, and it still keeps on giving today. It has changed the way we do, the way we act, the way we meet, and the cost of how we do it. This same concept goes for so much else as a public administrator, but the fundamentals, or at least in my mind, are about service. Chief Alan Brunacini, dear departed long-time Chief of Phoenix, AZ Fire Department, always summed up what we do in public service with always being customer service centered. This means that we must always strive to give a WOW level with anything we do. This doesn’t seem like we see much of it anymore, do we? I went last week to buy a pair of On Cloud shoes since my wife and girls said they would help my back. The lady there acted as if she gave two winks of helping me, much less selling me a expensive pair of tennis shoes. But I still bought them, because it was the only game in town that sold them. I contributed to the problem. Could I have asked this lady about her day? Could I have made a spectacle? Well, I am not that way usually. It just bothered me that it seems to be the norm. In today’s climate, we are seeing more and more who don’t want to work anyway. Just be happy they are there. Well, it doesn’t set a good example to the generations to come. I hope that God has a way of reaching us all to get our attention about the way we take some stewardship in things. Be appreciative of the jobs we have, the education we have, and especially the blessings we so often take for granted. Whatever job we do, we can almost tie everything to public service. Whether its EMS, Fire, Police, Food, Sanitation, Building Construction, or anything; we serve. Serve people to the best we can. Make the best with what we have, and be a good judge of what we have to use. If the budget is low, make tough choices to do the best with our budget. If we do get more funding, still, make smart decisions in how we spend.
