INSTRUCTIONS PURPOSE (OVERVIEW)Proper integration of source material into an essay requires accurate quotations and careful paraphrasing. The purpose of this assignment is to practice both.
SKILLSPracticing in-text citations will allow you to gain research-writing confidence and expertise. It will provide experience with quoting and citing sources accurately to avoid misquoting or failing to acknowledge the sources. The assignment also provides practice with paraphrasing and citing sources in a way that avoids borrowing the source’s words or sentence structures while representing faithfully the source’s intended meaning.
KNOWLEDGEThis assignment will help you become more efficient and competent in handling source material in an MLA research essay. You will gain knowledge of several of the rules for citing sources in-text.
TASK (INSTRUCTIONS)After reading and understanding the “Integrating Source Material” handout, turn to the second page of the SD Reader article by Matt Potter, and go to the middle two paragraphs. The first one begins, “At the center of the intricate matrix….” The second one begins, “Though Faulconer and city staff….”
Pretend that you are paraphrasing those two paragraphs in your presentation of that article. Also pretend that this is the first time you are using this source in your essay, so follow #2 of the Integrating Source Material instructions. Remember to continue to consult the Integrating Source Material handout as you proceed.
Write your own two paragraphs that paraphrase Potter’s paragraphs using MLA in-text citations. Make sure to avoid borrowing too much of the source’s language. See the handout!
Lastly, Potter’s final sentence in the second paragraph ends with a quotation:
G.E.’s filing said the company wanted to retrofit “lighting infrastructure and ability to reuse assets for Intelligent City use cases.”
I want you to end your second paragraph of paraphrasing by quoting this entire last sentence. That will require you to create a quotation that has a quotation within it. So go to #9 of the Integrating Source Material to see how to do that correctly.
CRITERIA FOR SUCCESSPoints will be awarded based on the following:
LENGTH: Two full paragraphs have been written that do not merely summarize the two source paragraphs, but fully represent them.
CONTENT: The two paragraphs paraphrase completely the key information of the two source paragraphs. The required quotation is also included and accurate.
MLA CITATIONS: In-text citations follow the rules provided by the “Integrating Source Material” handout.
AVOIDANCE OF PLAGIARISM: Paraphrasing does not borrow the source’s words or sentence structures.
I will award points based on a holistic assessment of the assignment in terms of the criteria above.
