Select a battery or electrical powered tool or piece of equipment that you know how to use and write instructions for how to operate it. Include at least one visual for it and include safety instructions.
Formatting Tips:
Start with a title centered at the top of the report
Use section headings for each separate area
Include an introduction with the purpose and importance of the instructions
State the necessary technical ability required
Identify the time required for completion
List the parts and tools or equipment required and any special conditions
Include safety notes and any personal protective equipment (PPE)needed
Levels of Safety:
Danger – signals that readers may be at risk for serious injury or even death (highest level of warning)
Warning – signals that the reader may be injured if the step is done improperly
Caution – alerts readers that mistakes may cause damage to the product or equipment
Other Tips:
Use command voice (Place the flat edge on the table…)
State one action per step
Keep the steps concise
Number the steps in a detailed outline format (See Pages161-163)
Add visuals with each step if possible
Add comments, notes or examples to clarify the steps
Signal when the instructions are completed
Provide trouble shooting tips or how to contact someone for further information
