In discussing wisdom, explain how it might be measured by the common good – what seem to be the key elements of the common good as Socrates (Plato) sees it? Briefly explain how courage and self-control (moderation) are understood and why they are important for the common good of the polis (i.e. the city-state Plato envisions). Explain how and to what extent individual justice is portrayed as the proper harmony of the other 3 virtues (435c – 441b). That is, how does Socrates explain that if each of the others is well-developed, and each does its proper “job”, would a person realize the virtue (i.e. arête) of justice? In light of this picture of arete – i.e. it requires the 4 virtues to be well developed, consider Plato’s discussion of the ability of women with appropriate aptitude and skill to step into any role, including posts as Guardians. Briefly outline the argument for such and for why it is just (453b – 457b). Critically evaluate this argument (including – what are we to make of the various references to women being “weaker” – are those signal or noise?). In considering how serious Plato seems to be, discuss the strength/weakness of this argument strategy for promoting more inclusive access to leadership.
