Essay questions

Utilize the readings which have been assigned in this section answering the questions with reference to a minimum of two texts for each question.  Try to utilize different texts in the second question you answer than you used in the first question. Each question is worth 50 points.  Formatting reminder: play titles go in italics while the titles of poems and short stories go in quotation marks.  Please use the essay format with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. There is no maximum length (be reasonable), but it would be difficult to answer these questions effectively in less than 400 words. 1.Victorian Britain was consumed by the ongoing debate about what rights women should have and what the woman’s role should be, with traditionalists upholding the “Angel in the House” model while progressive writers tried to carve out more active, and sometimes more public, roles for women.  Using support from at least two of our readings, explain what was expected of a “genteel” lady and explore the ways at least one text subverts those expectations. 2.What are the moral or ethical responsibilities that both governments and employers have to the working classes? Where is the line to be drawn between free commerce and exploitation, and to what extent should the government involve itself with matters pertaining to commerce and worker’s rights?  Using examples from at least two texts from our readings, explain how these issues play out in the works of Victorian writers who were invested in questions of safe and fair working and living conditions for the masses?
