The research essay will be an Argument essay that is your own personal interpretation of the work or a key aspect(s) of the work, but it will also involve research using 3 to 5 secondary sources (literary essays and/or books on your chosen subject) that you will briefly quote to either support your analysis or that you disagree with, explaining why you disagree with it (Note: Wikipedia, Spark Notes, Cliff Notes, Shmoop, etc. are not secondary sources). Your analysis should focus on the literary work(s) and you should not include the author’s biographical information (his/her life story). Avoid using the personal “I,” “in my opinion,” “I think” etc. – just say what you want to say. Don’t “summarize” what the story/poem is about (don’t retell the story or poem) – instead, focus on your analysis and interpretation. This Research essay should be 4 -5 pages (plus a separate Works Cited page) and should use MLA format. Underline your Thesis Sentence. PLEASE DO NOT ADD PREVIOUS WORKS FROM THE PROPOSAL PAPER. SHORT AND POETRY ESSAY INFO THAT’S AT THE TOP OF THE PROPOSAL IS JUST FOR THE PROFESSOR.
