Summary of the Study
Abedini et al., (2020), investigated how major depressive disorder (MDD) manifests itself in a variety of ways and linked to neurological changes. Despair, chronic depression, and dissociation are three of the most common psychopathological disorders that frequently lead to suicide ideas, aspirations, and behaviors. This study aims to examine the possible connections between despair and other biological and clinical indicators (i.e., determination of concentration dysfunction) in distressed patients in order to further investigate the idea of depression endophenotypes. The availability of dopamine transporters in all basal ganglia was found to have a negative correlation with despair. Furthermore, a link was discovered between despair and psychological symptoms. These findings add to our understanding of the neurobiological and clinical correlations of many psychopathological depressive symptoms, thereby paving the way for more appropriate treatment approaches.
Research Questions
What are the possible links between hopelessness and other clinical and biological indicators in depressed patients in order to further investigate the idea of depression endophenotypes?
Variables
Independent Variables (IV):
Psychometric Scales
Suicide risks
Hopelessness
Dependent Variables (DV):
Clinical outcomes and Lung function:
Striatal DAT Availability
Why was two-way ANOVA used?
The analysis of variance (ANOVA) is a statistical technique similar to the t-test that compares the differences between the means of independent groups (Laerd, n.d). The two-way ANOVA procedures are associated with mean comparisons or variance estimation for a continuous outcome variable and two or more nominal variables (Laerd, n.d.; Warner, 2013).Abedini et al. (2020) created two-way ANOVA statistical models to compare the clinical influence of despair and other psychopathic personality features of MDD on suicidal behavior.
What was the main result?
The discovery of a strong link between hopelessness and striatal dopaminergic dysfunction adds to the body of knowledge on this subject. Additionally, the link between suicidality and striatal dopaminergic dysfunction is fascinating. However, the findings need to be corroborated using validated suicidality evaluation tools. To validate our findings and evaluate potential therapies to reverse the functional effects induced by these primary clinical aspects of MDD, more research on hopelessness and suicidality is needed.
What was the interpretation?
There was a correlation between neurobiological and clinical correlations of many psychopathological depressive symptoms, thereby paving the way for more appropriate treatment approaches. Given the widespread psychopathological features of anhedonia and despair, such as a lack of productivity and negative perceptions, which appear to entail the dopaminergic rewards program, the main goal of this study was to see if depressed mood is linked to a peculiar determination of the concentration dysfunction in a group of depression; we also assessed suicidality through the use of a self-administered questionnaire. Second, we looked at the probable links between hopelessness and other psychopathological aspects of MDD in order to determine their clinical relevance to suicidality.
Critique of the Discussion of Results and the Study’s Limitation(s)
Because of many limitations, the findings should be regarded with caution: first, the small sample size may be a significant limitation to our hypotheses. Second, because of its ability to bind the norepinephrine exchanger (SERT), 123I-FP-CIT is a quasi wave that travels for DAT, because only low-SERT concentration has been described in the basal gangli. Third, the research does not provide a comprehensive examination of suicidality using a specialized scale, because the BHS only provides an indirect indicator of individuals’ suicidal tendencies, and the HDRS-21’s third item is not a recognized scale for suicidal risk analysis. Furthermore, potential confounding factors (such as relationship status, traumatic events, the number of MDEs, and the duration of the first MDE) should be considered in future studies because they may impact DAT levels in the basal ganglia.
