Instructions: Assume that you are working for Microsoft. Please write up the Value Driven Model. Focus on the virtual communication market, but feel free to use your creativity to discuss other applications that they could develop when you get to “deliver the value”. Write up the first four steps in detail. Your goals are to find the information, and more importantly, to provide insight into what the information suggests for the management team.

For example, under Gain Insight, answer the following questions:

Please research the market and industry and do a SWOT analysis. Provide a table with enough detail for each point to be self-explanatory and succinct (a short sentence, not just 2 or 3 words). Include data in the points if possible and use footnotes for your references.

The following steps may be in paragraphs below the table.

Describe market trends in terms of customer needs?

Find out the size of the market, projected growth, and market share distribution (identify competitors). Please be clear on the market that you are describing, e.g., virtual communications market or VR headset market in the in U.S., or in a particular country or region.

What are competitors offering? Provide a detailed but concise breakdown of the offerings and any advantages that each company might have. Does the company have a sustainable competitive advantage?

What are the critical environmental factors that may help or hurt the company’s future success?

These are opportunities and threats that would be in your SWOT, but you could add 2 paragraphs to add clarification.

Under Choose the Value, answer the following questions:

How are the VR products and remote communications markets currently segmented?

Demographic, Geographic, Psychographic (values, attitudes, lifestyles), product benefit, usage rate.

Are there segments that currently are not being served?

Which segment is their primary target market now, and which segments should the company consider, based on growing needs or a match with the firm’s capabilities?

Differentiation: What makes the brand stand out over its competition? (Think about: if I had to summarize Company X in a few words, what would I say?)

Under Deliver the Value, answer the following questions:

Describe the product offerings (current and proposed). You can use your creativity here to suggest something new.

Describe any associated services for the new line (if applicable).

State which channels (retailers) would be most useful for the new line, and why.

Price level for the new product line, compared to competition.

Under Communicate the Value, answer the following questions:

Positioning: State how your company should try to place the brand in the mind of the consumer (relative to competitors) – refer to your section on differentiation for ideas. Try to come up with a few taglines.

What tools should they use to promote the new service. Bear in mind that not all tools will be appropriate.

If you say advertising, which media type will you use, e.g. TV, radio, outdoor, Internet, social media, print. What media vehicles will you use, e.g., Social media ads – Twitter, FB, SnapChat, Instagram, etc. (These decisions will be determined by the target market you selected above). Your choices should be reasonably justified or matching, so if you have some data to say that __% of SnapChat users fall in your target market, then that will support your decision.

The assignments will be worth 100 points. Eighty points for content and 20 for presentation.

Include an attractive cover page and strive to make the assignment look professional enough to submit to a top manager at Microsoft. One thing regarding presentation, it is more important for it to be easy to read than for it to be colorful. This is particularly true of the charts. If you try to copy in a chart from a source and it cannot be read, please consider putting the numbers in Excel and recreating the chart.
