Cicero, On Duty

The great Roman orator Cicero, believes that people have a responsibility to be morally good. In order to be a morally good person, he believes that one must be disciplined and attentively thoughtful. He believed that a wholly righteous individual has four roles of responsibilities: universal, individual, self-chosen, and accidental or situational. Cicero encourages self-interest as a means to better oneself to promote altruism and improve the quality of society. A successful democracy is selfless; it puts the people first, protecting equality and providing equity for all. I feel that people have a responsibility to be kind and they owe it to themselves and others. Kindness is one of the greatest powers a person can possess and it’s quite easy to achieve. There is too much hate and anger in this world and politicians, celebrities, historical personalities, and other individuals in the public eye have done a great disservice fueling hateful ideas that have done nothing but divide us. This has always been relevant in politics, but even more so lately with corrupt politicians, conspiracies, and extremists. One of my favorite quotes about kindness argues that “breaking things is easy, you break it and it’s done. It is much harder to fix something. Fixing things takes time, patience, and compassion.” Kindness and compassion will always triumph over evil.
