The Color Purple – Alice Walker

The book review that one writes can include many components. Using the questions/statements below analyze the book that you read and demonstrate a clear understanding of the concepts in the textbook. You must include substantial content from the textbook in the book review. Textbook content should support what you are reporting about the book. For example, if a main character lived in poverty, information about poverty that is in the textbook can be used in explaining the character. Please provide specific examples from the book that you read in your description(s).

Part I:

Book Summary

Summarize the general plot of the story. Include a brief synopsis of the introduction, main story, and conclusion.

Describe the primary social justice issues presented in the book.

Part II:

Main Characters

1. Describe the main characters and how they are impacted by social injustice.

2. Describe the culture of the main characters. Is the cultural environment that the main characters are living in impacted by social injustice/inequalities? How?

4. Were the main characters understood well by others, or misinterpreted? Did understanding or misinterpretation influence the social justice issues experience by the characters.

Part III:

Social Justice Issues

Select three social justice issues that were evident in the book you read. Clearly describe these issues.

White people have a historical habit of ‘helping’ and ‘fixing’ people whom they deem ‘other’ and inferior. This damaging pattern even has a name: “White Savior Syndrome.” The ultimate, and deadly, irony is that it serves mostly to reinforce ideas about white superiority and white goodness. Please describe three historical examples of this, then provide three examples from the book you read.

What would justice look like for the characters in the book?

Develop a plan to address the social justice issues. The plan needs to include actions at the school and community level.

The plan should include:

A brief description of what interventions will take place, who will be impacted, the resources needed, and how the interventions will be evaluated.

A minimum of two goals with two measurable objectives for each goal.

Indicate how the objectives will be evaluated.

What is the potential impact of the interventions?

Part IV:

Relating to Your Personal Experiences

Could you relate to any of the characters in the story? Why? Why not?

Have you ever done or felt some of the things, the characters did?

Describe three moments over the course of your life when you were taught – through language or silence – what to think and feel about race and inequities in America.

What did you learn about yourself from reading the book?

Has your perspective changed about a social justice, culture, or life concept after reading about the character’s struggles in the book? Due December 7, 2021
