Federal policies involving electronic health records include HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act) and HITECH, implemented by ARRA (The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act). The original driver of HIPAA was to encourage the development of health information systems by establishing guidelines for transmitting health information electronically.

A provision of ARRA, the Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical Health Act (HITECH), was passed by Congress in 2009 and supported the healthcare industry efforts to streamline processes and share data across multiple systems, creating a Health Information Exchange (HIE).

For this discussion we will be working 2 topics: HIPAA & HITECH, responding to one for your initial and the other for your reply posts.

  • Last names A-L HIPAA is your assigned INITIAL post: please respond to the questions (using HIPAA details) below in your initial post, followed by responding to at least 2 different students HITECH initial posts for classmate responses.
  • Last names M-Z HITECH is your assigned INITIAL post: please respond to the questions (using HITECH details) below in your initial post, followed by responding to at least 2 different students HIPAA initial posts for classmate responses.
  1. Discuss one aspect of your assigned Act and apply its relationship to the adoption or implementation of the electronic health record.
  2. Research the topic of willful neglect and how it relates to your assigned Act. Describe one situation representative of willful neglect and how to resolve this in the workplace.
  3. Analyze the impact of your assigned Act and describe issues which would continue to be present had the Act not been established.

Your responses should be thorough, well-conceived college-level responses that are grammatically correct. When you answer these questions, justify your responses with facts and details from the readings, and with your conclusions. Please write your answers in complete sentences.

After making your post please respond to at least two peer posts.  When you respond, be sure to include comments on their explanation and provide suggestions to improve their explanation.
