Assignment 6– Critiquing Law and Policy from a Marxist or Conflict Perspective
Please read Chapter 9 in the textbook –and review the other materials in Module 6– to familiarize yourself with Marxist and conflict perspectives on deviance. Then, I’d like for you to apply the ideas from that chapter to an area of law or policy in the real world.
Like labeling theorists, Marxist and Conflict scholars are interested in questioning why we have the categories of crime and deviance that we have. Drawing on the idea’s of Marx, Marxist and Conflict scholars are most interested in how the law and the justice system benefits those with economic and political power and disempowers the working classes. They would be interested in how the law is applied to the relatively low-level crimes of the working classes, while the harmful acts of the powerful are rarely categorized as ‘criminal’– and they would be interested in how these discrepancies benefit those in our society who have the most economic and political power.
