Assessment 1: Conceptual Reflection (1,500 words)
Due Monday 16th August 2021 6:00 pm
Purpose of this Assessment:
For students to start thinking critically about the concepts of culture, history, identity and
human rights, and how these relate to students own views and personal understanding of the
concepts relate to them personally.
To encourage students to engage in the practice of sharing their ideas with other students
online.
To help students to write their reflections on their learning experience and their critical
understanding of four key concepts as they develop a photo board and engage both academic
literature and the ideas of other students.
Tasks
This assessment consists of two tasks which will be accomplished in two parts:
i. Posting photos and captions on online discussion board, and
ii. Writing a reflective essay.
Part 1: Posting photos with corresponding captions on the Blackboard ‘Discussion Board’.
Take your own or find photos, that represent:
(a) Your personal culture
(b) A historical influence on you
(c) Your identity
(d) Your view of human rights in society
Because the photos are a representation of each of the four key concepts, this means you must find
one photos or images for each of the concepts (four photos/images all together).
These photos/images may come from your personal collection or from the internet. The main
criterion is that they should represent your ideas about the concepts above.
Once you have chosen what you feel are the appropriate photos, you are to write a 100-word caption
for each photo that explains how the photo demonstrates and represents your ideas about the specific
concept.
The photos and captions are to be posted to the Blackboard ‘Discussion Board’ under the associated
hashtags:
✔ Photo 1: #SEM2 2021MyCulture
✔ Photo 2: #SEM2 2021MyHistory
✔ Photo 3: #SEM2 2021MyIdentity
✔ Photo 4: #SEM2 2021HumanRights
Your Tutorial Lecturer will give you specific instruction on how to submit the photos and captions
on the Tutorial Group’s Blackboard Discussion Forum..
Through this forum, you will be able to view other students’ work and provide constructive comments
regarding their perspectives. In turn, you will also receive comments as your photos and captions are
also available for viewing.
The purpose of this interaction is to help you develop your ideas for completing the second part of
the assessment, which is the reflective essay. To maximise this engagement, you are to view and give
feedback on no less than (3) photos and captions for each concept.

Part 2: Writing a reflective essay on the key concepts (1,500 words).
The purpose of the essay is for students to critically reflect on how their conceptual understanding
has been developed and applied through the selection and sharing of photos on each of the concepts,
and how viewing other students’ photos and reading their captions have influenced their perspectives.
Your reflection should address the following questions:
✔ Explain how each of your photos depict the specific concepts that you selected the photo for,
and how we have delt with the concept in this course so far.
✔ Explain how your ideas about these concepts have been influenced since you shared your
photos with on the Discussion Board and saw other students’ comments and ideas through the
‘Discussion Board’?
Remember that this is an academic piece of writing. Therefore,
You must use appropriate and formal language.
You must use scholarly references to support your reflection and provide a full list of
references at the end of your work, following the APA 7th edition format for referencing.
Make sure your reflections are supported by relevant theories and concepts that we have
introduced during class sessions.
The essay is a reflective piece of 1,500 words (or no less than 1,350, and no more than 1,650 words).
Remember that the reflection is about the photos and how they demonstrate your ideas about the key
concepts. Therefore, you must include your photos with the essay.
Once you have completed the reflective essay do the following:
Attach the photos as appendix to the reflective essay.
Save the final version of your reflective essay as a PDF file.
Then submit the final document electronically through this course’s Blackboard page under
the ‘Assessments – Turnitin Submission’ tab.
