What do you want to be when you grow up?

What do you want to be when you grow up? This is an extremely popular question parent, family and
friends often ask kids as they’re getting older. Some parents will assume that their kids will be a lawyer,
doctor, engineer, just to name some careers.
I did not know the area I wanted to study and work in until the age of 16 when I first walked in a hospital
in Haiti. I had visited my brother Billy, who had developed a fever and difficulty breathing.  What
impacted me, was when I entered the hospital, there were several sick patients that were suffering
severely and needed a doctor to help ease their pain and suffering, but there was a lack of medical
personnel and supplies.
It was heartbreaking for me to see so many human beings suffering and not able to help alleviate their
sorrows. Ever since that day from the hospital, I notated that I want to make a difference and better my
community.
I want to be in the medical field for a quite simple but profound reason, which is to teach, educate, and
take care of sick patients. Once I am being granted the opportunity to receive the necessary skills to
become a healthcare provider, I will feel like I am accomplishing my purpose in life. With the proper
education that I am looking to receive in this institution, I will have the knowledge to be an addition to
provide relief to those that are suffering in the hospitals just like the great physician that saved my
brother’s life in Haiti.
Can you imagine having excruciating pain and not having an experienced physician to help you? I have
seen and experienced the lack of caretakers and want to make a difference. So, if I am asked why I want
to be in the medical field my answer is simply to brighten and put a smile on someone’s face through
their problems. Caring for my community is a calling that goes deeper than just a job or career for me.
