Module 2 Deliverable: The 6 Growth Phases

Overview 

The Module 2 Deliverable is a 4-6 page paper that uses the Managerial Practices Table as a central assessment tool to identify where an organization lies on Greiner’s 6 Growth Phases Model. The age and size of the organization will be discussed, as well as the impact of industry-related factors. A comprehensive discussion of the five categories within the Managerial Practices Table will provide reasoning for final placement on the growth chart. The outcome will show the organization in a specific growth phase (evolution) or crisis phase (revolution).  A final discussion will identify counterproductive practices that serve as a barrier for future growth. A series of scaffolding activities will be used over the next few lessons to build towards the final deliverable. 

Directions 

  • Read: Greiner, Larry HBR. Evolution and Revolution as Organizations Grow 
  • SELECT one company from the list below, or a company of your choice. If you choose to complete this assignment individually, you may use your employer as the basis for assessment. If you complete this assignment with one of your peers, neither of your employers can be used. 
    • Graphiq, Wegmans, Walt Disney, Baird, Chik Fil A, Workday, SoFi, Genetech, US Navy, Nike.  
  • Research the company using Greiner’s model as a framework for assessment. Include two visuals with this paper, 1) a completed Managerial Practices Table, 2) The 6 Phases of Growth (showing placement). As you write your content, be sure to keep in mind factors discussed in Lessons 4-5 that are associated with effective writing. 

Paper Outline 

Introduction 

Provide a brief description of the organization (1 paragraph) as well as Greiner’s Six Phases of Growth (include in text citation).  

Managerial Practices 

Discuss how age and size of the organization, as well as industry-related factors, impact the pace and direction of organizational growth (crisis). Based on your research, use the Managerial Practices Table as a worksheet to show the practices/policies (within each of the five categories) that are evident within the organization. To focus your discussion, use the five categories as subtitles within your paper. Provide examples/reasoning in your discussion that support(s) the outcome of your worksheet. Provide narrative on each category: Management Focus, Organizational Structure, Top Management Style, Control System, and Management Reward Emphasis.  

The completed Managerial Practices Table and a ONE category narrative (2-3 paragraphs) will be submitted for Scaffolding Activity #1. Feedback will be provided and then the other four category narratives will be completed for inclusion in the Module 2 Deliverable. 

Growth Chart Placement 

Identify where the organization lies on the Six Phases of Growth chart. Show placement of the company on the visual. Discuss how the outcome of the Managerial Practices worksheet led to your choice of placement on the chart: growth (evolution) or crisis (revolution). Provide proof/reasoning.  

The completed Six Phases of Growth chart, showing placement of the organization, will be part of Scaffolding Activity #2. Include discussion how the outcome of the Managerial Practices worksheet led to your choice of placement on the chart. Feedback will be provided and then this will be integrated into the Module 2 Deliverable. 

Counterproductive Practices 

Discuss existing counterproductive practices that may prevent the organization from moving forward on the growth model. Include characteristics of the upcoming growth phase and the current practices that work against upcoming growth. Grenier’s model offers insight into the importance of understanding the dynamic changes that exist in organizations in order for change to be supported. It is apparent that without a clear understanding of the disorder within the organization, a deliberate change plan cannot be implemented. 

A Concept Map, outlining the main topic areas and subtopics, will be Scaffolding Activity #3 (this will provide the structure for the Module 2 Deliverable). 

Deliverable Format 

  • Professionally written paper, 4-6 pages in length (not including cover/reference pages) 
  • Authored by 1- 2 students (individual or pairs) 
    • If you pair up with another student: only ONE student should submit the assignment, and include BOTH student names on the submission. 
  • Include a cover page with the course name (MBADM 814), deliverable title, individual/group names, and date 
  • Follow prescribed deliverable discussion points (above) 
  • Include the two visuals as noted  
    • The Managerial Practices Table and Growth Chart, 1/2 page max within body of paper.  
  • Use titles/subtitles to show flow and transition 
  • Include in text citations and reference page (including full citations) 
  • The Concept Map will be handed in as Scaffolding Activity #3 but will not be included in the Module Deliverable. 
  • Double space, 12-font, page numbers 
  • APA Style is suggested  
  • Use spell/grammar check 

Grading 

As communication is one of the core components of this course, it will be a core component of evaluating the Module 2 Deliverable as well. Grading will be based on your ability to effectively communicate, and the quality of, the information you’ve developed during the Module 2 Scaffolding Activities.
