Abstract

This paper will include the topic of male monks. When I came up with this subject I had little to no knowledge of monks, what they do on an everyday basis or their contributions to modern day society. Personally, when I thought of monks; in my mind I pictured Asian men that lived isolated in the mountains in a robe praying without verbally communicating with each other. Now that I’ve done research those thought are so very far from the truth. In fact knowing what I know now my thoughts on Monks were uneducated and uninformed. The definition of a monk is: Any male person who has taken religious vows of poverty and celibacy in order to dedicate himself to a life of disciplined religious practice. Monks can be found in almost every religion and known for their single-minded devotion to the religious life. This was very eye-opening for me because I had a preconceived notion that Monks we only Asian; but in fact they are monks included in almost every religion and ethnicity of people. The purpose of this literature review is to examine the various types of Monks. The article will provide readers with a general insight on the lifestyles of Monks, and it will also explore how Monks contribute to our society in the 21st century.
