In this module, you will explore the relevance (i.e., the impact) of the humanities. How can the perspective of the humanities have a positive impact on your current or future professional career? That is, how could you make use of these principles in the workplace? If you have questions for other students, feel free to include them as part of your response.

In your responses to your peers, comment on the posts of two classmates who find the humanities beneficial in a different way than you do. Explain whether these benefits are universal or specific to a certain kind of field. Could the benefits your peers found aid you in your current or future job? Why or why not?

Peer #1I think humanities will impact my career in HR positively because I will be able to differentiate culture and understand why something is important to certain employees, and have insight and respect for their ways of being. I have always heard the majority of HR departments treat the employees as a “unit of property” rather than a human. Humanities helps the HR department help see the meaning of the work and how the employees are what makes the company work. It helps with the communication of training and how to relate to the employees’ concerns and questions and how to show sympathy and encourage the employees to enjoy the company. My way was a little harsher when correcting but my methods of teaching were very good and patient, I just have to learn to balance my ways to show that tactful, professional way to employees that have never been in jobs that I have been and taught the way I have been and making it better for others.

Peer #2The humanities and the skills learned from studying them are a big part of my current career in law enforcement and will definitely continue to benefit me as an agent for all years to come. Taking the time to learn the why, and what is going on in an individuals life and how it impacts them, their families, and the communities are in takes patience, insight, and empathy. These are all skills that are improved through the study of the humanities. It is important to work without implicit bias and prejudice in my position. This is easier said than done, but as long as I remain honest with myself and aware of any bias that I have, I am able to actively work on overcoming them. I have to utilize reasoning, researching, communication skills, professionalism. I have to be able to make connections between crimes and the criminals who commit them, as well as the victims. I feel like i have gained a lot thus far from this course and my previous humanities course that has helped me to see things differently. I have learned to slow down more and take my time which has helped to see details I may have missed before.
