Doctor of Management-Healthcare Management and Leadership
Definitions
The MPH concentration in health leadership and management presents students with a clear understanding of the problems of organizational management and leadership in the health sector (Henry & Novak, 2020). The primary objective of the concentration is impacting individuals with knowledge and skills that are crucial in balancing the demands of managing and leading a health sector during a time of change.
Health policy track; this concentration’s main objective is to assist students in developing, identifying, and interpreting available health information or evidence to inform critical public health policy problems at national, local, global, and state levels (Rajab, 2019). This curriculum integrates system thinking and precise scientific approaches from various disciplines to effectively respond to the current needs of public health practitioners and policymakers. In addition, this concentration is utilized to assess possible solutions to challenges affecting the public health sector.
The public health informatics track provides training in concepts and methods of informatics to apply in population health management and public health (McFarlane et al., 2019). Mainly this concentration is designed for health professionals who want to develop an area of specialization in the ever-evolving field of public health informatics.
Hospital administrators are in charge of organizing and monitoring a hospital’s health services and everyday operations. Among their other responsibilities are managing staff and budgets, communicating amongst departments, and ensuring proper patient care (Touray & Touray, 2021). This concentration is crucial in health care management and leadership since, as hospital administrators, it will be my responsibility to provide management and leadership to the health center.
These three definitions appeal to me since they are closely related to my concentration; for instance, the health policy track curriculum outline entails crisis and response in public health practice and policy. With my healthcare management and leadership skills, it will be my responsibility as the hospital administrator to formulate policies and practice guidelines that will be crucial in addressing crisis experiences within public health organizations. Another significant aspect of this concentration is risk policy, management, and communication; this aspect is vital in the management and leadership of a health organization (Henry & Novak, 2020).
As part of the management team, it will be my responsibility to establish containment measures that will reduce healthcare risks and ensure that the public health sector enhances the quality of its services. In addition, communication is vital to the effective management of the healthcare sector. Effective communication will assist in the prevention of conflict within the organization since my subordinates will continuously be updated on what is expected from them. The health sector as a business entity is expected to generate profits from its services and operations; hence health economics and hospital administration will impact me the necessary skills and knowledge to ensure that the health sector maximizes profit generation and, at the same time, reduce risk.
The second definition of public health informatics track; this concentration appeal to me since it will assist me in the evaluation of different domains of public health informatics such as decision support, population risk stratification, bio-surveillance, and predictive model using informatics systems like laboratory information, and the electronic health records. Information in the public health sector is crucial since data affect how services are delivered and the regular operation of the health sector. This concentration will also assist in evaluating a particular population health information system according to various criteria such as standard classification systems, embedded decision support systems, standardized protocols, and governance structure. Leadership and management structure keeps on changing to accommodate the needs of the health sector; therefore, the right skills and knowledge will be essential in formulating a management structure that will effectively address any challenges the public health sector could be facing. Lastly, the concentration will be significant in the proper management of informatics tools for health organization through the establishment of solutions that promotes security, legal compliance, confidentiality, and integrity of the health sector and, at the same time, make sure that the information is available for population and public health use.
Part B
Operational definition of healthcare management and leadership concentration; this concentration entails improving, measuring, and monitoring the financial and clinical performance of the healthcare organizations and at the same time training health sector leaders for organizational change; this concentration will impact me with skills and knowledge to formulate an efficient organizational leadership and governance system that will incorporate the missions, core values, and vision of addressing to the needs of the public. In addition, this concentration will facilitate the utilization of strategic planning skills and assessment of the health sector to establish external and internal issues that may affect the delivery of health services (Henry & Novak, 2020). After identification of these internal and external issues, it will be easy to formulate skills that facilitate the participation of both external and internal organization stakeholders in the development of strategy and implementation. Also, with the knowledge and abilities impacted by this concentration, it will be possible to create and sustain a culture of excellence in the healthcare organization through valuing people, community health, visionary leadership, and delivery of results and value. Lastly, as a management doctor, I will have the ability to manage knowledge and information systems to enhance the quality of decision-making regarding service and care delivery.
