Look at your peer’s personal example of poor communication. Then, post replies to other classmates’ threads. In your replies, explain how the situation would have ended with a different result if competent communication had been used.
COLLAPSEESSAY 1: NEEDS RESPONSE
Competent communication is important in the field of criminal justice for many reasons. One reason is because there is a lot of communication in the field in general. There are a lot of reports that need to be written, tickets, communication through the radio, and so many more sources of communication (Columbia Southern University, 2017). If someone misunderstood something that someone else is communicating to them, then it will just mess everything up and invest further time and effort into something where that time and effort could have been spent somewhere else. Another reason is that the criminal justice field is also similar to the legal field and they work very closely together (Columbia Southern University, 2017). With that being said, it is smart to have the correct and efficient communication to prevent any confusion between the two fields or even in a courtroom. Finally, it will provide the most efficient help that the criminal justice field can provide. From responding to a call or solving a crime. Effective and competent communication can and will make the world of difference in a tight and fast-paced situation.
An example of a situation where competent communication was not used was when my friend and I got into an argument because I did not communicate effectively. My friend wanted me to play soccer with her instead of softball for our spring sport. I told her that I would really like to do that. She was excited and I was excited too. Over the next few days, I realized I really did not want to play soccer. On the day of tryouts, I went to the softball tryouts instead of the soccer. My friend was upset and confused as to why I was not at soccer tryouts. I told her that I didn’t really want to play soccer anymore. She was mad that I didn’t just say that in the first place. The consequences of me not telling her the truth was that we were in an argument and I hurt her feelings. The Lord said, Do not lie. Do not deceive one another (Leviticus 19:11)

ESSAY 2: NEEDS RESPONSE For this assignment I will be discussing why competent communication is important in the Criminal Justice field and why we should use it. What is competent communication and why is it important? Competent communication is “communicating both effectively and appropriately. Effectiveness of communicating looks at getting the message that we want across and asking questions in ways that warrant the response we are looking for” (Denney, 2018). When we think and look at the Criminal Justice field, we need to think about how these people are going to work risking their lives every day to protect their community. Therefore, communication plays a big role in these people’s lives! Not only do we need to know how to communicate with a great understanding, but we also need to think about how the outcome could be if we weren’t to communicate right. I personally have not had any altercations or experiences with police, but I read a story online that I thought would be a great example to use for this assignment. On the Washington Post news page, I read a story of a woman who was a 911 dispatcher, and she interfered with 911 calls. For example, Crenshanda Williams (dispatcher) hung up on 1,000 of calls while working in this field. In the article it said a man named Hua Li “took two minutes and three tries to get help from Houston 911 as a convenience store owner while he was laying down bleeding to death on the floor of his store after being shot”. It is also said in the article when Li called the first time the call disconnected immediately. “Li tried again. Thirty seconds later, his call went through to Crenshanda Williams. “Houston 9-1-1-, do you need medical, police or fire? Li responded, “This is a robbery”, Williams then sighed and disconnected the call. (Wootson Jr, 2018). “When Williams was questioned on why she hung up on 1,000’s of calls Williams said, “sometimes she just didn’t feel like talking”. I personally believe if Crenshanda Williams would’ve communicated to her job that she was going through a “hard time in life” like she said in the article they would’ve worked with her. We don’t know how many lives this woman could’ve cost people and or if she did already.

ESSAY 3: NEEDS RESPONSE
Competent communication is vital to the field of criminal justice, particularly for investigators and police officers. This type of communication can be oral, but it is usually in the form of police or criminal justice reports. In the presentation, “The Importance of Writing Skills in the Criminal Justice Context,” Mike Milnor explains that police reports are the basis for the prosecutor’s case (2018). Therefore, police officers need to pay close attention to details as well as convey information accurately and clearly. However, without the proper communication or conveyance of information throughout the entire investigation, crucial details could become lost or distorted. “If you can’t translate what you’ve done in a clear, concise manner so that everybody can understand it, then we’ve not accomplished anything as police officers” (Cox and Milnor, 2018). Proper writing and communication skills will help ensure that valuable information is preserved and conveys the most accurate description of the account.
A personal example of a scenario in which competent communication was not used occurred a little over two years ago. My school system had been closed due to the increasing amounts of snow. Early that morning, a tanker exploded directly in front of our house, causing the culvert to collapse. As a result, both sides of the road closed. Later that day, we called the school and asked how the bus would pick up the students along this stretch of the road. They told us that the bus would pick us up like normal, so we thought that the bus would come through one end of the roadblock and pick the students up. However, the next morning, we waited at the end of our driveway like normal for over 45 minutes, but the bus never came. We called the school and found out that the bus had waited on the other side of the roadblock, but it had already left 30 minutes earlier. As a result, my parents had to drive me to school, and I was counted as tardy for my first class. Proverbs 13:17 says, “An unreliable messenger can cause a lot of trouble. Reliable communication permits progress” (TLB).
