One method commonly used is in workplace committees. Workplace committees focus on the development of policies, protocols, and procedures. Nurses must understand how the process is envisioned, initiated, and evaluated (2022).

Nurses are in a perfect position to make potential agents in changing the way of policymaking (Hajizadeh A; Zamanzadeh V; Kakemam E; Bahreini R; Khodayari-Zarnaq R, 2021). The evaluation of policymaking in the healthcare context can be overly complicated. Some potential challenges are limited resources andmarginalization of nurses in policymaking.

Another opportunity for nurses to participate in policy review is in professional nursing organizations. In professional nursing organizations, such as the ANA (American nursing association), Nurses involved in professional nursing organizations Have the opportunity to participate in a wide variety of policy initiatives andadvocate on a local, state, and national level (2020).

One challenge to nursing involvement in health policy is the lack of political awareness and understanding of how important being involved in policy is (2019).

I believe a good strategy for learning about professional nursing organizations and how they can help each nurse play a part in policy changes is to promote awareness starting in nursing school. I am continuing into the health care facilities. The members of the employee committees in my healthcare facility reach out to all employees regarding the information on what each committee does, including making available new policies and increasing awareness of how to participatein policy review/ changes.

Peer 2

Nurses are charged with quality care provision, which also involves abiding by the existing policies that govern healthcare provision. Though nurses are expected to be resilient and adapt, the policies are meant to make nursing practice easier and more effective. It can be attained when nurses participate in policy development. Nurses interact with policies daily in practice, making them the best place to provide policy reviews to ensure old policies can be upgraded to solve existing and new problems in the dynamic nature of healthcare.

Aside from providing direct reviews at their workplace through their organization, RNs and APRNs should also utilize the various nursing organizations to review existing policies. The organizations set for lobbying have policy review avenues that nurses can use to participate in policy development actively. For example, the American Nursing Association (ANA) encourages participation by providing resources and analysis with discussion forums for policy evaluation (American Nurses Association, n.d.). The ANA gives three components of advocacy proposing new policies for existing problems, proposing reforms for policies that are not addressing their role effectively, and promoting a proper implementation of good policies.

The challenges arising include the limited knowledge of the RNs and the APRNs on writing policy. In most cases, nurses are reluctant to participate in reviews when they feel less informed on the policy and the process. Another challenge is that previous reviews may have had little impact on policy changes which consequentially discourage future participation and gives nurses a sense that they lack influence (Jurnes, 2019). It is exhausting to feel that one’s opinion does not matter, which may hinder RNs and APRNs from participating in policy reviews.

The first strategy to advocate for nurse participation in the policy development and review process is advocating for a change-driven focus for all RNs and APRNs. When discussing policies, the attention given to physicians sidelines nurses as key essential healthcare professionals. The public should be sensitized to the role of nurses, which will make nurses feel appreciated and encourage more RNs and APRNs to participate in policy development. The second strategy of promoting RNs and APRNs to participate in policy reviews is through health organizations and the healthcare system by introducing educational opportunities for the medical staff (Jurns, 2019). The seminars will be used to communicate avenues for participation and could be best implemented in collaboration with the nursing organizations at different levels.

In the Module 4 Discussion, you considered how professional nurses can become involved in policy-making.
