Their mission is to save lives, and they are committed to ending world hunger through the prevention, detection, and treatment of malnutrition in children, which includes emergency situations caused by conflicts and natural disasters.

The Action Against Hunger organisation’s work globally has impacted the lives of 15 million individuals, through a network of 7100 humanitarian professionals across 50 countries. In India, the operations from the grassroots upwards, are focused on taking decisive action against the causes and effects of malnutrition.

The organisation currently works in partnership with State Governments on preventing and treating malnutrition through the “First 1000 days of life” approach. As Fight Hunger Foundation – an Indian NGO, Action Against Hunger India is legally registered. A non-political and non-religious organization, which is one of the few NGOs in India focusing specifically on child malnutrition. The board is composed of representatives from diverse sectors, including business, health, academia, and diplomacy, with Professor as Chairman Emeritus of the Foundation. Day in, and day out, their teams work tirelessly with some of India’s most vulnerable communities: detecting and treating malnutrition in children, and training families on how to prevent it – saving lives and enabling thousands of India’s children to beat hunger and look forward to a brighter future, where they can be part of the country’s development.

Industry Group-Xiaoyan Jing

Amway India is committed to making a tangible social impact through several social initiatives and is one of the most important supporters of the campaign. Amway India, in collaboration with its NGO partner SRF Foundation, is focusing on improving child malnutrition in India. Aligned with the ‘Government of India’s National Nutrition Programme’,

Amway India launched the ‘Power of 5’ campaign, which aims to raise awareness about child malnutrition and improve nutrition knowledge and practices through a wide range of educational interventions. Their goal is to reach out to children under 5 years of age, their mothers and the community at large to educate them on how best to use their resources to ensure the nutritional health of their children. The Power of 5 initiative aims to bring about behavioural change for mothers and communities that must understand what good eating habits are and have the skills to make good food choices for their children and contribute to their healthy development. “

However, even though the Indian government has addressed the issue of food distribution with laws, it has not been able to focus on the root of the problem of child malnutrition and address it. According to research, poverty is not the main cause of child malnutrition. The CEO of Amway India said that the programme has been very successful globally – reaching more than 23 countries every year. Contributing to the Indian Government’s National Nutrition Mission to improve nutrition levels in the country.

Government Department(This is my part in the presentation, but this paper is supposed to focus on its position and contribution)

While Indian children suffer from hunger, India is also a big exporter of food. Some people may ask why they continue to export food when their own people are starving. The reason is the economy. India’s agricultural products exports had grown 19.92% during 2021-22 to touch $50.21 billion, which is 11.32% of merchandise exports. It is not a temporary problem, back in 2019, Practice manager for the international organization Food Bank, Chakib Jenane said the food processing industry is at 10% of its potential. The lagging could result in a poor business environment, lack of appropriate linkages, which lead many small players and enterprises to face huge capital start-up issues. The Indian government appears to be on the case though, they urged private sector and industry groups to help to achieve food security, simply that they need financial support.

On the bright side, the Indian government has launched many programs to combat chronic child malnutrition. In 1995, The Ministry of Human Resources and Development (MHRD) was the authorized body to implement the MidDay Meal scheme. AS we mentioned before, both central and state governments are involved. Also, they cooperate with NGOs, the largest NGO running this program is Akshaya Patra Foundation. the government implements the funds, while ngos to implement the Mid-Day Meal Programme in order to increase the number of children they reach out to.

International Organization

The World Food Programme has been working in India since 1963, with the goal of helping them improve nutrition and achieve food security. Its strategies are India’s Mid-day Meal plan, Reactivation of child wasting services, and The use of iron- fortified rice to improve micronutrients in Indian children.

In 2022, WFP and the APF will work together to assist with India’s Mid-day meal plan, with the aim of providing India with lessons learned from previous decades of school feeding to help India navigate post-COVID-19 supply difficulties.

Malnutrition among Indian children is a social topic that has received much attention in the public sphere. To mitigate the impact on Indian families and societies of the crisis of children suffering from COVID-19-related complications from malnutrition, the WFP India Director recommends reactivating services for the early detection and treatment of child wasting. This is an urgent need for national and state governments to help and act together to ensure that every family has access to essential services related to nutritious diets.

Futhermore, WFP distributed iron-fortified rice to supplement multiple micronutrients in pilot areas to improve the nutritional value of school meals, resulting in a 20% reduction in anaemia rates.

These behaviors and mechanisms are effectively addressing malnutrition among Indian children, with some degree of success. As an international organization with the right to speak publicly in the public sphere, WFP has also aroused discussion in the online public space on the issue of child malnutrition in India.

For this assignment you will undertake an individual assignment linked to the group assignment. The individual component of the task requires you to choose one particular stakeholder within your group and present their specific position on the issue and evaluate their contribution. Each group member must choose a different stakeholder.
