Mr. H has signs of swelling and redness on his legs and hands. The patient points out that his joints hurt when he moves. Mr. H uses a walking stick and sometimes needs help to stand up. Mr. H said that walking had become difficult over the last few days due to joint pain. The patient has had the disease for the previous two years but has always managed to depend on himself in walking and doing other chores. However, the severity of the disease symptoms has been increasing, especially the pain and swelling. The diagnosis of Mr. H involved laboratory tests and imaging. The laboratory tests involved sampling various body fluids, including blood, urine, and joint fluids (Chen et al., 2017). A knee was numbed, and a needle was inserted to draw the joint fluid to obtain joint fluid. A sample of blood and urine was also obtained for laboratory tests. Examining the body fluids would help pinpoint the type of arthritis the patient was suffering from. The imaging helped to determine the condition of the joints. The patient is obese. Some disorders to considerin this case include osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, and gout.Arthritis is the most common arthropathy. The condition is characterized by articular cartilage loss over time. The underlying bone also remodels. The disease happens due to the active response of chondrocytes in the articular cartilage. The active response of the chondrocytes also happens in the surrounding tissues’ inflammatory cells (Sissons, 2022). Collagen and proteoglycans are broken down due to the release of enzymes from the cells, which destroy the articular cartilage. The underlying subchondral bone exposure leads to sclerosis, reactive remodeling changes, and osteophytes and cysts in the subchondral bone. The joint space is gradually lost. The condition is normally treated by drugs such as naproxen and ibuprofen. Motrin is one of the common ibuprofen drugs administered orally. The initial dosage for Mr. H would be 200 milligrams every 4 to 6 hours (MedlinePlus, 2022). The dosage may increase to 400 2

milligrams as needed at the same rate. Naproxen is taken once a day; 750 milligrams or 1000 milligrams, depending on the amount of pain (MedlinePlus, 2022). The drugs work by blockingthe production of prostaglandins. An injured tissue produces prostaglandins which cause redness, inflammation, and pain. The intended effects include relieving pain and inflammation. However, the drugs can provoke ulcers, bleeding, and holes in the stomach, intestine, and esophagus. One of the critical diagnostic tests for the case is laboratory tests. The laboratory tests would help to identify the type of arthritis. The tests are essential since they help to determine whether the patient has arthritis. The laboratory test would include an examination of the patient’s blood, urine, and joint fluids. The laboratory may carry out anti-cyclic citrullinated peptide (anti-CCP) and rheumatoid factor (RF) (Sen & Hurley, 2022). Anti-CCP measures the number of proteins the body makes when inflammation occurs, while RF measures the proteinsmade when the immune system attacks healthy tissue (Zelman, 2022). Both are measured in units per milliliter of blood. The absence of arthritis will read between 0 and 20u/mL of blood in both tests. The long-term nursing goal for treating the patient is to minimize the chances of the reoccurrence of severe symptoms. The short-term goal of the treatment is to prevent pain. The reduction of pain will improve the comfort of the patient substantially. The treatment will help to improve the quality of life of the patient. If medication is unsuccessful then this patient would need arthroplasty, in which my patient is being seen in the clinic for his pre-anesthesiology work up and clearance.3

ReferencesChen, D., Shen, J., Zhao, W., Wang, T., Han, L., Hamilton, J.
