Unions have been utilized specifically at larger companies with a labor force working minimum wage and aren’t given best practice benefits to ensure that workplace standards remain intact. Although once popular, unionization has drastically decreased recently. One example is Amazon workers in Staten Island who decided not to unionize after only receiving 38% vote (Kohan, 2022). The main reason for the decrease is intimidation tactics, increased government regulation, globalization, locations of unions, and scrutiny of public sector unions. (Martocchio, 2018, p.310).

Reasons for Unionization Decline

The first reason for the decline is intimidation tactics. When unions grew in popularity, there was increased pressure on non-union members to join even if they did not want to. These pressure tactics are done to increase the number of employees in the group and improve negotiations with the company. Laws, such as Texas Labor Code, Section 1010001, were implemented to ensure employees were protected against threats or force to join. (Labor Code, 1993) Secondly, unions used to be the voice of discriminated and disadvantaged employees. However, policies like the Civil Right Act prohibited discrimination based on race, color, and religion. (United States Department of Labor, n.d). Employees, therefore, did not need unions anymore. Thirdly, globalization has been a key issue in the union’s negotiating power. As unions are the voice of the employees, they aim to increase working conditions and overall compensation. With unions demanding more than a company wants to offer, companies have moved to source labor abroad. Fourth is the ability for companies to relocate. Due to the ease of companies moving locations to less restricted union areas, companies are willing to relocate to avoid the long-term wages, and demands unions are demanding. Finally, politicians are signing laws to destroy unions in the public sector. According to the Department of Labor, in 2021, the union membership rate of public-sector workers was 33.9%. (Bureau of Labor Statistics, 2022). However, that number continues to decline as government officials, such as Governor Scott Walker, sign laws that strip power away from public sector unions (Samuels, 2015).

Reasons to Join a Union

Firstly, an employee will join a union to improve their likelihood of getting a better salary. As an employee has a tiny voice in large corporations, it is near impossible for their voice to be heard. Therefore, joining a group of hundreds or thousands of employees can improve their chances of demands being heard. The second reason is a safer workplace. If employees agree that a workplace’s working conditions are below standard practice, joining together to get their voices heard is optimal. Finally, better benefits are crucial as employees are more likely to get employer pensions and health insurance if they join a union.

References

Kohan, S. E. (2022, May 4).
