Book Essay Prompt<\/p>\n
We encounter history through a variety of mediums: news, television, movies, even video games. American literature\u2014that is, American fiction writing\u2014has, however, been the medium with the greatest power over the kinds of stories we tell and the history that informs them. Thus, for this assignment, I want you to read one work of historical fiction (or a work rooted in history or particular historical moment) and write an essay placing the book in its proper historical context. <\/p>\n
This could mean drawing out the history that informs the book and its background (ie. how American anti-Semitism shaped the narrative of The Plot Against America) Or it could mean placing a book within the particular historical context in which it was written (ie. how the experience of Civil War veterans dealing with the trauma of the Civil War is reflected in the Red Badge of Courage). In any event, successful essays will be able to place the chosen book in conversation with themes, ideas, or topics discussed in class. You may also draw on outside sources, should you need them, though be sure to use only reputable sources. A list of potential books can be found on the syllabus, though you are also free to choose a book that is not on this list, so long as you run your choice by me. <\/p>\n
