Unless you have a child with these issues or are a healthcare worker seeing and treating these patients, you would probably never know about it. Symptoms of dysfunctional voiding can manifest in many ways including urinary incontinence, urinary frequency, urinary urgency, constipation, and urinary tract infections (Yang et al., 2018).

Voiding dysfunction can become a serious health concern if left untreated. If a patient is developing UTIs due to dysfunctional voiding, this can eventually lead to kidney issues including kidney scarring (Yang et al., 2018). Kidney issues is more common in patients with urinary abnormalities or in patients with vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) (Yang et al., 2018). Reflux is when urine from inside the bladder travels backwards into the kidneys through the ureters. If a patient has a UTI and reflux, this can lead to kidney infections which are more severe than bladder infections.

Multiple treatment can be used to treat dysfunctional voiding. First, we rule out anatomical anomalies and then we treat the constipation and bladder habits (Yang et al., 2018). Most patients need to learn new bathroom habits including scheduled voiding, double voiding, and spread legged voiding in females (Yang et al., 2018). These things along with constipation treatment have been successful in treating dysfunctional voiding and preventing UTIs (Yang et al., 2018). Biofeedback pelvic floor therapy can be added to the treatment plan to train the sphincter muscles to loosen and tighten better, helping with incontinence and leaking of urine (Yang et al., 2018). Informing primary care providers on this health issue and the first line of treatment can help the families save money and prevent suffering with early intervention (Nies & McEwen, 2019).

The Tohono O’Odham and Pima reservations were cut off from their water supply 100 years ago which led to their crops dying and livestock either dying or fleeing the area to find food. In my opinion after watching the Bad Sugar video, I believe the majority of the people within these two tribes that developed Type 2 Diabetes is due to their new lifestyles since losing their water source. Losing that source forced them to learn new cooking techniques and recipes that would include ingredients they found at stores and could get cheaply. This led them to eating more processed foods and cooking with fattier foods like lard, because it is cheaper and can feed more people. This is a much unhealthier lifestyle than they use to have of eating off the land and all natural food ingredients (Adelman, 2008).

Resouces

Adelman, L. (Director). (2008).
