A group of people conduct a study as well as drawing from other sources, but the article refrains from the use of phrases such as “We found these characteristics” or “They concluded that.” The researchers removed themselves from the wording of the article and instead gave readers direct statements of conclusions drawn from the research. “Findings proved that significant differences of soft skills in leadership, communication, thinking skills, information technology management, interpersonal and collaboration skills emerged amongst students based on the type of schools” (Ahmad et al. 269). Data is being presented so the language used in the article needs to be very precise and state exactly what it means. “The school environment can be defined as a set of internal characteristics that distinguishes one school from another and that influences the behavior of staff members and students” (Ahmad et al. 261). This example gives a literal definition of school environment. Internal characteristics makeup school environments and distinguish them from each other. If the language in the article was figurative, the authors may leave it up to the readers to determine what a learning environment is. A learning environment may be compared to the bubble in which a student finds themselves when presented in figurative language. The authors use this type of language so readers can understand what makes up school cultures and classroom learning environments. Literal language is common in applied field writing because it shows the impact of something on its field.

This style of writing gives an implication of how the results of this study can better impact the development of soft skills in students.
